Lap Quilt - 56” x 66”

Transparency is a delightful illusion that can be created with color.  This class will teach you the three basic formulas to achieve the effect of transparency.  We will also piece a quilt top using a couple of these three transparency formulas.

Fabrics:
Before you select your fabric, decide on the personality or ‘mood’ you want your quilt to have.  Start by selecting 1 yard of border fabric with a small to medium sized print that has this personality.  It might be something in your stash or it might require a shopping trip to your local quilt shop.  Are you into a specific season (spring, summer, fall or winter) or holiday (Valentine’s Day, The 4th, Ground Hog Day, Halloween, Hanukah, Christmas)?  Do you like bright primary colors or soft pastels?  Who are you making the quilt for?  Is it for a baby or a young child?  Teenager or young adult?  Should it read masculine or feminine?  Soft and curvy or geometric?

Once you have selected your border fabric, use it to select tone-on-tone prints or solids for the rest of the fabrics.  While the border fabric should have at least three different colors in it, keep it simple so that it doesn’t compete with the quilt’s center.  From the border fabric, select three different colors.  The first two colors are used in both the block and the sashing.  The third color is used in the sashing and the cornerstones.  The accent color is a blending of the first two colors.

When dealing with transparency, we will be keeping the selection of fabric to either subtle tone-on-tones or solids.  You will not want obvious prints, plaids, or stripes (except maybe for the border).
